Extreme close-up shot: a more intense version of the close-up, usually showing only the subject's eyes or another part of their face. Insert shot: a close-up that focuses on a specific object, prop, or detail, signaling to the audience that it's important.

A close-up or closeup in filmmaking, television production, still photography, and the comic strip medium is a type of shot that tightly frames a person or object. Close-ups are one of the standard shots used regularly with medium and long shots.

In photography, film, and television, a standard shot-size which shows a foreground subject dominating but not filling the screen. An MCU of a person would show the upper torso and head. In face-to-face interaction this mimics the proximity of the personal zone. See also close-up.

In a movie a medium shot, mid shot, or waist shot is a camera angle shot from a medium distance.

In photography, filmmaking and video production, a wide shot is a shot that typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings. These are typically shot now using wide-angle lenses.

An establishing shot in filmmaking and television production sets up, or establishes, the context for a scene by showing the relationship between its important figures and objects

A bird's-eye view is an elevated view of an object from above, with a perspective as though the observer were a bird, often used in the making of blueprints, floor plans, and maps. It can be an aerial photograph, but also a drawing.

In cinematography, a low-angle shot, is a shot from a camera angle positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below the eye line, looking up. Sometimes, it is even directly below the subject's feet. Psychologically, the effect of the low-angle shot is that it makes the subject look strong and powerful.

A high-angle shot is a cinematic technique where the camera looks down on the subject from a high angle and the point of focus often gets "swallowed up". High-angle shots can make the subject seem vulnerable or powerless when applied with the correct mood, setting, and effects.

A camera angle which is deliberately slanted to one side, sometimes used for dramatic effect to help portray unease, disorientation, frantic or desperate action, intoxication, madness, etc

A point of view shot is a short film scene that shows what a character is looking at. It is usually established by being positioned between a shot of a character looking at something, and a shot showing the character's reaction. The technique of POV is one of the foundations of film editing.

The over-the-shoulder shot is a camera angle used in film and television, where the camera is placed above the back of the shoulder and head of a subject. This shot is most commonly used to present conversational back and forth between two subject

LO: To explore the use of setting & colour in films

Lesson 5: Setting And Colour

1.) A horror film is one that seeks to elicit fear or disgust in its audience for entertainment purposes. Horror films additionally aim to evoke viewers' nightmares, revulsions and terror of the unknown or the macabre. Horror may also overlap with the fantasy, supernatural fiction, and thriller genres.

2.) New York City is a huge city with many unique things in it, it's the perfect place to record a big scened area.

3.) A Seaside Resort is a wonderful place for a romantic comedy, because it's close to the sea and who doesn't love a romantic time by the sea?

4.) Brazil is a perfect place for an adventure film, it's really in the nature and very fascinating.

5.) A good place for a science drama is a wide opened area and a perfect modern laboratory, Los Alamos.

1.) They might use blue and red for a superhero costume because it's like superman and everyone knows him, so it's like some sort of flashback.

2.) They might use a black suit for a villain because black is a dark colour so the villain might be dark and mysterious.

3.) You might use bright colours for a comedy because it's cheerful and happy (considering jokes are supposed to be funny).

1.) The action movie is all filmed in Los Angeles.

2.) I think it's set where it is, because there's a lot of different places you can go.

3.) It changes every so often.

4.) Because they're in different places.

5.) Because it looks like it.

6.) Probably not, because Stan Lee was a very good and unique writer.

7.) Not unless it is on the screen.

8.) It looks quite modern at times.

9.) Because at times, there can be sad and dark times and happy and colourful times. The colour all depends on the scenes.

10.) Yes, there are different colours that match peoples names and personalities.

11.) To tell the audience what type of characters they are.

12.) The film would have bad bad quality if it was black and white.

The film posters suggest how the film was based on action.

The setting colour would  be yellow, green, and blue because the cells are usually coloured blue, yellow, and green.

For a horror movie, I would definitely use the words like; gloomy, dark, mysterious and damp. These are very good words for a horror film or book. I must admit, I absolutely love horror movies, they're almost my favourite genre!

Lesson 7: Sound in film.

LO: To explore the use of sound in films.

1.) Horror music sounds

Creepy music, door creaking, dripping of a tap, slow music, screams, creaking floors, footsteps.

2.) Action film sounds

Loud music, calming at some points.adjective.

(of a story) told by a narrator: Interspersed throughout the movie are diegetic scenes in which the offscreen present-day protagonist comments—usually scathingly—on the behavior of his former self.

Diegetic sound is any sound that emanates from the storyworld of the film. The term comes from the word diegesis, which is the evolution of a Greek term that means narration or narrative.

Diegetic & Non-Diegetic

The sounds goes from quiet to loud.
The sound suddenly stops then gets intense.

Diegetic for cat and speaking.
Non-Diegetic for explosion and music.
Punching is diegetic sound, so is breaking class.
Drum beats are non-diegetic.

Foley

Foley sound got its name from Jack Foley, the sound effects artists who developed and shaped the technique. Foley effects work both with and to replace the film sound recorded on set, which is known as the field recording. Most scenes use a combination of field recordings and foley effects.

Sounds:

Gunshot
Box being put down
Box opening
Dog falling onto floor
Banging
Ball tapping shoe
Dog jumping into box
Dog scratching
Boy sighing
Door opening
Crutches noise

1.) Yes

6.) Eternals

7.) Back To The Future

8.) Old

Setting & Props

Science Fiction

They use many props and settings for this. For example:

  • C-3PO'S HEAD // THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980)
  • THE JOKER'S SUIT // BATMAN (1989)
  • STAR LORD'S HELMET // GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014)
  • INDIANA JONES'S WHIP // INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989)
  • ALIEN CREATURE COSTUME // ALIENS (1986)
  • They might use a science lab or the future.

Romantic Comedy

You might find that the people are in a love hotel, or are on holiday.
Perhaps they might use a jungle?
They could also use wine glasses, tall buildings, cities and a pregnancy test... just to stir a story up a bit!

Horror Film

The typical settings you will find in horror film are forests, haunted mansions, dark and isolated parts of town, basements, a house or an abandoned building.

  • Television. A TV set kidnaps Carol Anne using its ghastly analog claws in Poltergeist, turning this suburban accoutrement into the Freeling family's worst nightmare.
  • Baby Carriage
  • The Chainsaw
  • Cricket Bat
  • Video Camera
  • Ouija Board
  • Michael Myers Mask

I can tell by the girl is from the movie Mean Girls
She looks girly, pink & maybe selfish?
She looks quite spoilt

The third guy looks scruffy, sweaty & rough.

Facial Expressions & Body Language

In the first image, you can see three people sitting in chairs in a dark room, they look like they are either having dinner or playing a scary game, it looks like they're scared or awkward.

The second picture looks like men have just fought, and they look sweaty (or they might be about to fight)

Lighting & Colour

Low Key Lighting: Low-key lighting is a lighting effect that uses a hard light source to enhance shadows in your scene. Unlike high-key lighting (in which shadows are minimized), low-key lighting is all about shadows and contrast. LightStalking puts it this way: A low-key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colours.

High Key Lighting:High key lighting is a lighting style that results in a brightly lit frame with soft lighting, minimal shadows, and low contrast. In photography, film, and television, this lighting style uses minimal shadows with a majority of the frame composed of highlights.

Positioning Of People/Objects

Creative Task

1.) Setting - It would be clean, machines, dissection table
2.) Props - Hazmat suits, robot to fetch things - Alexa  but better
3.) Costumes and make up - Hazmats and crazy hair
4.) Lighting - It would be high key but on the part where they are showing the objects but it would be high
5.) Positioning - High angles but low angles at some points

I can hear music, loud breathing, teeth being brushed, toilet flushing, cars, crunching of getting off the sofa and a zip.

3.) Action, thriller
4.) Yes, some people survived but a couple didn't
5.) Yes, some people have to escape a shark
6.) It has other details, in summary, contrary to what the mythology might be, there is no way those two shooting stars you see in "Jaws" were real-life shooting stars photographed in-camera during filming. Those shots contain animated effects work to simulate shooting stars.

Titanic:

1.) Female
2.) Yes, this movie has people having to save people
3.) Drama, Historical Drama, & Disaster
4.) Yes, some people survived but a lot didn't
5.) Yes, people have to escape a boat

3.) I would choose a witness, a person that doesn't believe it until they see it, and a scientist.
4.) A child would die at the beginning, they would be 7 years old.
5.) The scientist would find out that the Mosasaurus had bred itself back and was no longer extinct.

My Disaster Movie is based on a Mosasaurs (you may be thinking, but they're extinct?) yes, but they bred themselves back to life..if that makes sense. My main character would be a male & female. They would be cops. They would receive a note saying that there has been a shark attack...but that's what they thought it was..it turns out to actually be a Mosasaurus. I would choose a witness, a person that doesn't believe it until they see it, and a scientist. A child would die at the beginning, they would be 7 years old. The scientist would find out that the Mosasaurus had bred itself back and was no longer extinct. This story would be a bit like Jaws...it's just about a Mosasaurus instead, but it is still very similar.

The title is: Moso

The beginning of my disaster movie is...

A beach - paradise setting, sunshine. daytime. busy beach, with a lifeguard.

All 5 characters are sunbathing, relaxing on towels.

Chloe
"God it is so hot, I can't stay here much longer."

Brad
"Stop being so negative, just jump in the sea to cool off."

Chloe [defensively]
"I was only saying, I don't really want to get in the water, I don't like it that much. "

Brad [jokingly]
"Do you think somethings gonna eat you?"

Jason laughs.

Chloe
"Shut up! Its probably cold in there anyway."

Wyatt [questioning]
"Why don't you just test it with your foot?"

Amy
"Yeah, Chloe. Let's go."

Chloe [unsure]
"Fine..."

They walk over to the water.

They dip their feet in.

Chloe [shouting/screaming]
"Agh! It's cold!"

Amy
"It is not cold, Chloe."

Amy walks in further.

Chloe crosses her arms.

Suddenly,  Amy gets snatched out the water by a Mosasaurus.

Industry

LO: To explore how a film is made and the various roles.

The Big Six

Universal, Fox, Disney, Columbia, Sony, Hollywood.

Film Industry Jobs

1.) Actor

2.) Screenwriter

3.) Camera Assist

4.) Make-Up Artist

5.) Director

6.) Producer

The Grip (or Key Grip) is the person in charge of setting up equipment to support the camera, and on some sets, support lighting equipment (but not the actual lights.
While directors think of the artistry of the shots, grips work out how they are going to move the cameras to make that happen. Before filming starts, grips break down the script and work out with the DoP what equipment will be needed to support the cameras for each scene. They go on recces to check out the location.

The term "grip" is derived from an older term in U.S. theatre where it designated stagehands who moved scenery. U.S. grips typically belong to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

The gaffer is the head electrician in a movie crew; it's her job to manage the lighting, making sure the levels are appropriate for the desired effect in the scene. The gaffer is assisted by the best boy, and may have a crew of electricians. A grip is also concerned with lighting, but from the mechanical side.

The best way to move up on any set is to start out as a production assistant. After surveying the wide variety of jobs, if you want to be a key grip, try to become an assistant in the camera department, or see if the grips have their own dedicated production assistant, depending on the size of the movie.

Can You Sell a Screenplay Idea? No, generally producers don't listen and buy movie ideas because of legal reasons and you cannot copywrite an idea. But if your idea has some type of influence such as a famous actor, producer or intellectual property attached with a film treatment then yes.
If you sell an idea or a storyline, you can expect to get $5,000 on the front-end and about $20,000 on the back-end if the movie gets produced. If you sell a treatment, you should expect around $15,000 on the front end and $30,000 on the back-end.

Pre-Production:
Pre-production is the stage of a film, television or commercial production that takes place before filming begins. It is followed by production (during which visual content will be filmed) and post-production (where the filmed visual content will be edited into a coherent whole).
Production:
Production means to make goods or provide services for the people. People require goods for their survival. So the entrepreneur makes use of land, labour, and capital to produce goods which the people need and want. The goods are produced according to the income of the people.
Post Production:
This last stage is where the film takes shape as an actual product. Footage is brought together, sound is recorded and added and the finishing touches are put to the film ahead of marketing and release.

Moonfall

In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it.
While audiences are right to be curious about a potential post-credit scene due to the reasons above, they don't need to plan to spend extra time in the auditorium because Moonfall does not have a post-credits sceneWe already know that the movie's writer and director, Roland Emmerich, had plans for a Moonfall trilogy, too, so everything adds up to Moonfall 2 becoming a reality eventuallyMost of the comedy comes from John Bradley (best known as Sam from Game of Thrones) as the conspiracy-minded K. C. Houseman, a bespectacled, excitable nerd here to educate the audience on the fringe theory that the moon is in fact a hollow “megastructure” housing a tiny star. A mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. A mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. But Emmerich and his team really whiffed it with the script. “Moonfall” has the spectacle and special effects of a blockbuster, but the acting, dialogue and story development of a bargain bin parody movie. “Moonfall” is currently playing in local theaters and is not yet available for streaming at home.Moonfall is a 1998 hard science fiction novel by American writer Jack McDevitt. The book depicts the impact of an interstellar comet on the Moon and how the catastrophic effects are handled.

The colour pallet is blueish and blackish with a bit of yellow. The font style is like an old typewriter. The image is to show sad colours but a glimpse of light which shows the light of the mission. It shows that there are astronauts which means it is a movie about space, this is also proven with the moon background. The quotations are things like "The Dark Side Of The Moon". The small font suggests that space is big to everything, especially small text like that.

LO: To create film marketing material

The colours that would be in my film would be yellow to greys & blues. This suggests that it would be a nice, warm, sunny day but then when the attack happens, it turns cloudy and rainy.

Dark colours: Stormy, rainy and horrible days. Could also be an emotional part in a film, these colours are all used differently.

Light colours: Could be a nice day - probably sunny, possibly not. Could show the happiness and joy in emotions and scenes, but once again these colours are used differently.
